Trials Before the Witness

Aloha everyone! (My inbox was full of hellos in different languages so I wanted to fit in. xP) This week has been quite an interesting week! It has been really tough! Basically all of our appointments for the week fell through and Elder Wright and I were just struggling in general! But I have learned a few things.

We had some training this week about "Our breaking point" after we were done with the training we felt awful. But as I have pondered it I have learned a few things. First off is we can go a whole lot further than we think we can. Sometimes during planning I look at our empty planner for the next day and think "THERE IS SOOOO MUCH TIME WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH IT ALL!?!" And it kind of gets me down! But I break it down. I put in the things I have to do like exercising and studies and then focus on just one half hour! As I do this I start thinking "30 minutes thats easy! I can find something do for 30 minutes!" and before too long the day is planned up! This can be applied with everything! when the journey is beginning to get tough you just take it one day, one hour, one minute at a time! and before long! You are done and you are able to look back and see the progress you have made.

We have a saying here that we use all the time and it helps me keep my perspective. "Trial Before the Witness" meaning, we aren’t going to receive the blessings before we do the work, before we overcome something, and its just when you think you can’t take one more step, that the Lord gives you that momentum to go! Just like the story from Elder Bednar’s talk last conference how putting a load in the back of the truck gives it the traction to go! The Lord will not forsake us in in our time of need, We need to take those steps of faith to show Him that we trust in Him and God’s plan for us!

While I’ve been out here I have come to look at faith as more of an action word rather than a noun. Our faith should make us act! It should make us want to do whatever it takes to come closer to God! I saw this happen in one of my investigators, Lamar, 2 Saturdays ago he was saying how he wasn’t even sure there was a God and that he would rather bet on there being one than not. We challenged him to pray every night before church the following week. Last Saturday when we met before we even talked to him we could tell something had changed. He was smiling and loads happier than he was the week before! He was so excited to tell us he prayed every night this week and how he saw the change it made and how happy he was! He said he knew there was a God and that He wanted to still be baptized. It was such a good experience and testimony builder to me to see God’s hand in my life and others lives as well. I want to leave you with this quote from Elder Zivic’s talk in the April 2014 Ensign called "The Blessings of Perseverance"

"…hearing the words of President Pinegar was like hearing the voice of our Heavenly Father saying, β€œI love you, I sustain you, I am with you. Don’t give up. Repent and persevere on the path I have shown you. If you do, I promise you that we will see each other again in our heavenly home.”

This quote gives me strength to carry on in the work even when life gets tough! I know this work is the Lord’s work and I am so grateful for the chance I have to finally serve the people of Ohio! I love you and miss you all, and you all are in my prayers!

Miracles All Around!

This week my email is going to be a little different haha! but to start off I have been meaning to send this tidbit of information home but I keep on forgetting! CARR FAMILY!!!! THERE IS WAFFLE HOUSES ALL OVER THIS STATE!!! I AM IN HEAVEN!!! except my companion doesn’t like them so I haven’t been there yet… -_- BUT fear not! it will happen! haha!

Okay so I am emailing in gratitude because I have been blessed so much this past week and it has been incredible to see what faith, hard work and listening to the spirit can do!

Okay so we went to go ask our apartment owner to have someone get our carpets cleaned but when we went in we could tell something was wrong and so we talked to her and asked her if there was anything we could do to help and she told us that we could help by going around and just picking up the big pieces of garbage around the complex so the lawn people didn’t mow it, so we said a prayer with her before we left and we went and did it! It was really good actually! We met a couple that loves meeting with us so that was good! but anyways when we were all done and throwing the garbage into the dumpster a car drove by and dumbed tons of garbage out all over the road and at us. It was super frustrating so we went into our apartment and I saw a letter from Grandma Georgia that I hadn’t read yet and it brought me just the comfort that I needed! it was perfect!

Miracle number 2 for the week!

We were out teaching saturday night when we got a call from some sisters in a different area who had a member who was visiting someone while in prison and while she was there who had just gotten out for not paying a parking ticket, so she did, and on there way she basically taught him the whole plan of salvation and this big guy with tattoos just broke down in her car crying and told her that that was what he had been looking for! He really wanted to turn his life around and start taking care of his family! And he really wanted to come to church the next day (Easter Sunday) so by this time it was 11 pm at night and everyone we could get ahold of wouldn’t take him because we hadn’t met him (Which is understandable but I HAD talked to him on the phone) and so during my bedtime prayers I asked for Heavenly Father to help know who to ask who would be able to take him to church and before I could even finish my sentence a name popped in my head that wouldn’t leave. So I didn’t know whether to text or call because it was 11 pm at night. So I sent him a text and instantly he responded and said he could take him. I was so humbled and happy I had listen to those promptings! It was a HUUUGE blessing!

I love you all and I am so grateful for you all! OOOOH Bekah, and Kacy email me and/or write me please! Thanks love you byyeeeee

April 7th, 2014

Last P-day we had a lesson with Lamar. He had expressed some concerns about feel like all we did was come around to preach to him which was no bueno! So we told him about ourselves a little more and that we would love to do things with him! like play soccer and other things like that! and that got him warmed up again!

April 8th, 2014

Today I forgot to write in my journal so I cannot for the life of me remember what we did! xP bahaha ooooopss! xP We helped at the food pantry though!

April 9th, 2014

Today we had a Zone Meeting! We talked about getting re-excited about or areas and set some goals to help us get on it! That was reallllly good! After we had an exchange with my father/One of my first companions/assistant boss man Elder Kujanpaa! That was really fun and he showed us how to do work it! Tonight we had a lesson with an investigator who has been an investigator for a loooonnngggg time, he isn’t able to be baptized yet because of some restitution things, which is why he hasn’t but we are helping him and keeping that desire to be baptized. He is a really good guy and is better than a lot of members! After that we went over to Lamar’s with Elder K. who is a big soccer fan to play some soccer with us! We talked with him a little bit about the word of wisdom as well, he doesnt see a need for it but baby steps!

April 10th, 2014

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATIA!!! Today we taught an investigator name Tiffani who is a single mother with 5 kids! She is amazing and is going to school for business so she can open her own restaurant!

April 11th, 2014

Today we had Interviews with President and Sister Nilsen! Sister Nilsen asks how we are doing physically and emotionally and President Nilsen talks to us about how we are doing spiritually! While the other companionships are getting interviewed we are getting training! This time we were being taught how to incorporate Mormon Messages and the Bible Videos into our lessons! We have been using them soo much they work wonders! After that we went on exchanges with the Zone Leaders! I went with Elder Clark! It was a lot of fun!

April 12th, 2014

Holy busy day! We did service out the wazoo! First we helped Brother Greenley with his garden! and then we helped the Harmons clean their garage and then we helped a 77 year old lady, who is raising her twin 6 year old grandsons, We helped them clean rake leaves and are going back to help put down mulch! After we went to dinner with a recent convert name Suwoei! He is soo cool! After dinner we met with Shawn again (The guy who can’t get baptized yet) and showed him the Mormon Message, Look Not Behind Thee about Lot’s Wife and talked about no matter what has happened in our past we can make changes to better ourselves! Shawn made the comment that that video was perfect for him and that he needed it!

April 13th, 2014

What an amazing Sabbath Day! We Had Tiffani at church and then we took out a recent convert with us to visit some people! First we got a referral from the mormon.org website (Someone fills out their info saying they would like a Book of Mormon or the missionaries to stop by.) so we checked that out and at first the guy was like, “I am not interested in religion at all, someone must be pulling a prank on me, Im sorry for wasting your time.” But we continued to talk to him about him and then we started to go into the restoration and we had a book of mormon for him and about halfway through the lesson he was like, “can I have that?” so we were like of course! and by the end of the lesson he was like “I am going to go in and read this right now!” It was awesome! Then we had a lesson with Michelle and her daughter and her two grand daughters! It was really good!

New Companion and Things About My Area!

P-day time again! I am glad to see you all are doing well!

April 2nd, 2014

Zone fun day!!! So when transfers rolls around the zone leaders gets the zone together and plays games and does all sorts of fun stuff and then when the assistants call we all listen to see who is going to get transferred! So today we played baseball! It was a lot of fun! After P-day was over we felt like we needed to go visit a less active family in the ward and its a good thing we did! She shared with us how she was going through some things and how she wanted to come back to church and that she had been wanting a blessing but didn’t know who to contact to get one, so we gave her a blessing and went on our way!

April 3rd, 2014

Today was Transfer meeting! I saw Elder Strong (My MTC Companion) and Elder Tolley and Elder Shields (Both from my MTC district)!! It made my life and I missed them so much! At transfer meeting I got my new companion! Elder Wright from Payson, Utah! I would send a picture home but this computer is being dumb. Anyways after we got to the apartment and dropped his bags off we went and visited Lamar and talked to him about how church went! He loved it and loved how everyone was so nice and how they explained everything so well! He was also starting to tell us how he was having trouble feeling the spirit so we helped him understand better about how the spirit works! So we continued our lesson and as we were teaching he exclaims! "There it is!" haha referring to the spirit! It was pretty neat. Then as we started talking to him about baptism he was like "I get goosebumps just thinking about getting baptized. He definitely recognizes the spirit.

April 4th, 2014

Today was my first full day with Elder Wright and it was a good day! We did our weekly planning and talked a lot about the area because we are both new to it! We taught a kid today named Jay. He was out fixing his car when we showed up but he wanted us to talk to him so we taught him the restoration and he loved it. We are teaching him again on Monday.

April 5th, 2014

Conference weekend! Today we played Frisbee golf with members of the ward! That was a lot of fun! Then we got changed and watched conference at the conference session! It was weird to watch it 2 hours later I normally would! It was even weirder to think about how 6 months ago I was in Hawaii watching conference and a year ago I watched ever session in the conference center! So so soo crazy!

Okay so a little about my area! I am in the south side of Columbus, in the ghetto area pretty much! We are in a car area but we still use our bikes as much as possible to save miles. Most of the ward members live on the west side of Columbus and we are 10 miles away from the church. Its really hard to get investigators to church because most of them don’t have cars and we don’t have a lot of members who can give them rides. This also burns up our miles whenever we go to church or district/ zone meeting. But its a good area and there are good people here! Love you all! Be safe! I appreciate the letters they keep me goin! Thank you!!

Transfers!

I am a little short on time but here is the run down! haha I will write more on monday when pday isnt on transfers!

Things are going well! Lamar came to church on sunday and loved it! He is really progressing. We went on an exchange with the zone leaders, Elder Cutler and Elder Clark. They are both solid guys and I learned a lot from them both! I encountered my first Bible basher as well! He was nice for the most part but he was saying that we were being deceived and that he would pray that we we would see the truth. Earlier in the day we watch the mormon message by elder holland called “The Testimony of the Book of Mormon” and that just kept playing in my mind the whole time he was talking to us, and I just kept thinking that there is NO was the Book of Mormon is NOT true. Anyways I gotta go with it being transfers and such but I love you all and will write more later!Β
